MAJOR TRENDS OF THE DECADE

(film) 1826- The American lyceum circuit, a popular means of adult education, is founded in Massachusetts; it is followed by the foundation of the Chautauqua Institution in 1874. The lantern slide, which is widely used and popularly received on both circuits, paves the way for the later acceptance of motion pictures in education. (Saettler, 1990)

(film) 1880- The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City opens and "museums were declared to be social instruments for the educational progress of the masses." The museum movement's emphasis on the educational value of concrete experience helps to create a climate favorable to the reception of films as educational tools. (Saettler, 1990, p. 124)

(film) 1890s- Silent commercial films are shown in theaters.
