"CLINIC DOGS"

Scene: emaciated brown dog

Scene: Woman leading very thin white German Shepherd

I'm going to give you a little help here.

Yeah, he's walking by himself.

We don't want them to think that we've... that you've run away.

Look at you go. Look at you go.

I'll help you.

Where is his mom? His mom needs to see this.

And he had some pretty good chemical burns on him.

He's put on quite a few pounds I mean since, just since this week.

I can feel his muscle just coming back like somebody's just pumping up a balloon, you know.

He's got a great appetite. And he wants to do everything on his own. He doesn't want to have accidents in his cage, he wants to get out. You're a good eater and a good drinker, right?

He's a fighter.

Scenes: Mama pit bull with puppies

Mama cat with kittens

Mama dachshund with puppies

Caption: A shelter is not a good place to have babies.

Whoever cares for kittens and puppies must not have contact with other animals in order to prevent the spread of disease.

Scene: Volunteer feeding motherless puppies

Caption: Motherless puppies are a special challenge, and require almost constant care.

CAREGIVER: I didn't even draw your milk yet. I didn't even draw your milk yet. What am I doing? You're a big rooter. Yes you are. Rooter is your name.

Scene: Chow puppies

"SURGERY"

Scene: Sean helps Dr. Julie pin a brindle pit bull in the back of her kennel so she can be anesthetized.

DR. JULIE: Put this on there first. And then just push her to the back and then I'll pop this through the cage bars.

OFFSCREEN VOICE: Oh, you are sure protesting.

SEAN: Is she in a position you can do it?

DR. JULIE: Alright, squeeze as hard as you can.

DR. JULIE: Alright, done!

DR. JULIE: Good job!

OFFSCREEN VOICE: Very good job.

SEVERAL VOICES: She's coming out!

Scene: Veterinarians examine sedated dog on front porch of clinic.

Scene: Veterinarians confer with Best Friends camp directors on front porch of clinic.

JUDAH : So there's a palpable mass.

DR. SALLY: A palpable mass - it's probably a retained pup. That would be my best guess. Could be anything.

DR. SALLY: It could be a lot of things or we could get in there and it could be... nothing.

FRANCIS: I mean, it must have been retained for quite a while.

DR. SALLY: She's still... she's still got milk. So she could have lost a litter of puppies.

FRANCIS: Right.

DR. SALLY: And this is a retained one. I mean, it's just an educated guess. That's all.

DR. JULIE: But by the time you take her somewhere and knock her down again.

DR. SALLY: And McComb's x-ray machine was not fixed as of yesterday at 5:00.

Cut-away: Technician retrieves veterinarians' field box from nearby tent.

DR. JULIE:... well not necessarily, it could be a slow bleeding one.

FRANCIS: Does her general... signs indicate that she would do well in surgery, or...

DR. JULIE: Her general sign is that she's very very depressed and if she continues the way she's been going she's going to die.

DR. SALLY: She'll continue going downhill, I'd say.

DR. JULIE: But if she's sick for some other reason then putting her through surgery could make that situation worse.

JUDAH : Do we have enough equipment that's sterile and...

DR. JULIE: Yeah.

DR. SALLY: Do you have a cath ready to go?

DR. JULIE: Yeah

FRANCIS: Ok, well let's do it.

DR. SALLY: I say let's do it. Let's get a catheter and then...

DR. JULIE: Jen, we're going to do an exploratory on her.

JUDAH : Do you have like a backup clamps and stuff like that.

JEN: Ok, I'll go down there and get set up, Jule.

DR. JULIE: Yeah. We probably need to get her intubated.

DR. SALLY: So, do we want to just carry her over to the neuter commuter.

JUDAH : I can carry her if you want.

DR. JULIE & DR. SALLY: Ok.

Scene: With Jen assisting, Dr. Julie performs surgery on the dog. She had retained two puppies. Dr. Julie performs a therapeutic spay on the dog.
