Daily dog care involves feeding and watering the dogs, cleaning their kennels, and making sure they have fresh bedding. Sometimes dogs are kenneled in groups. These dogs need to be closely monitored for food aggression. Many of them are badly underweight when they arrive and it is understandable that they would want to protect their food.

To ensure the safety both of the dogs and of their caretakers, dog care volunteers work in teams of two and follow carefully developed procedures.

Disease prevention and containment is always a concern in an animal sanctuary or shelter.

In the video at right, metal dog food and water dishes are washed in a bleach and water solution to sterilize them.

Once the morning dog care routine is complete, it's time to "shop" for the next day's supplies. Best Friends received many donations of food, toys, leashes, and bedding. All are put to good use.

The dogs in this run have food, water, shelter and a bath to play in when the weather gets too hot.

Timmy, the dog in the foreground, has an eye infection. A member of the clinic staff will visit him every day to monitor his progress and to administer his medications.

Because of safety concerns, only those dogs who are living in crates in the clinic get daily walks.

So it's important to help the other dogs play and get exercise when they are ready for it. Dogs in the group runs play together but dogs who are kenneled by themselves may need some extra attention.
