Direct animal caregiving is only one aspect of running a successful disaster shelter. A number of support functions must be performed to allow the caregivers to look after their charges. |

A huge amount of laundry must be done each day to provide animals with clean bedding. With over 300 animals on site, 3 sets of washer-dryers were operating around the clock... as was the laundry crew! |

| The facility uses hundreds of crates every day: to transport newly rescued animals from New Orleans, to house cats and clinic dogs, to transport animals to foster homes. Pressurewashing of these crates is a daily activity. |

Thanks to thousands of generous donors, we have almost all the animal care supplies we need. But we still somehow need to make a huge shopping trip almost every day: more paper bowls for the cat areas; carabiners for the dog runs; laminating sheets for the office; shelves for the clinic; a new cell phone antenna for the command center; more serving utensils for the kitchen, 20 gallons of laundry detergent and enough food to keep the staff and volunteers going for another day. |

Kennel construction and repair is just one of many site maintenance jobs.
New kennels were added almost daily in order to accommodate an ever increasing number of dogs.
Tarps are added to the runs to provide protection from wind, rain, and sun. |

An onsite groomer is a godsend. Cats and dogs coming from a disaster area may have all sorts of horrible things in their fur, and may need to have mats removed from their coats.
At left, a dog is bathed and de-matted.
The video at right shows grooming of puppies and adult dogs.
